Alimony, Spousal Support and Maintenance defined

Alimony, spousal support, and spousal maintenance are the same thing.  Each state has its own interpretation of when spousal support should be required and how much it should be, and often this is negotiable as part of the divorce settlement agreement.  The alimony guidelines generally are intended to equalize the financial situation for both spouses if one leaves the marriage with a disadvantage in earning power.

Remember that child support is completely separate and is non-negotiable.   Alimony and child support have different tax treatments for both parties.  If your spouse and you cannot come to an agreement your lawyers can assist in determining what, if any, spousal support is warranted iin your state and in your specific situation.   An attorney may be recommended if one spouse is uncooperative or holds the power in the marriage.
