Do I need to notify my employer to have child support garnished?

If you are required to pay child support, it is a good idea to proactively contact your employer’s payroll department to get the correct amount withheld from your payroll check.  If you provide the certified copy of your divorce and the marital settlement agreement or the child support order, your payroll office may be able to setup the deductions and call the child support agency to get the proper electronic transfer initiated.

Carefully check your next few payroll statements to be sure the proper amount is being withheld.  You owe the child support even if the automatic withdrawal is not working.  If you have to pay your ex-spouse via check, you will be required to show proof of payment to correct any arrears the agency’s records will show.
